Turn Obstacles into Opportunities Malik Hairston Graphic Design
All my life my father provided me with a paradoxical perspective. He would tell me to be aware of my disadvantages in this country, while also telling me that man was made equal. His constant reminder of how “you get 3 strikes in this world, but 2 because you’re black” was confusing at the time, but eventually became a reality that I understood as mine. It is a biased reality that not only affects me as an individual, but one that exists for people who see it as a problem and are affected by it. Essentially my work captures an experience that reveals this juxtapose reality of what is visual and what is also subliminal, in regards to the struggle of being black in a predominantly white society. This represents why I am missing a strike. Each piece is an issue that exists, but has no physical form to show proof. I therefore have incorporated statistics that help validate the concepts represented in these visuals. Through the use of graphic design, specifically typography and photo-manipulation, I am creating for my audience an experience that they may have never known existed or felt, but that I feel everyday. I want my work to expose the unconscious reality of my experience to the conscious who are unaware of it and it’s impact.
